Judging a book by it’s cover is something Simon Cowell does spectacularly well. I guess it comes with the territory of being a judge on several talent shows in both America and the US. He has been known to be a bit on the less accepting side of things when it comes to the people who dare to audition in front of him…
Back in 2012, two very brave souls stepped on the Britain’s Got Talent stage, and the rest will go down in history as one of the very few times Simon Cowell has actually been left speechless.
Jonathan Antoine and Charlotte Jaconelli are way more than meets the eye. The minute they stepped on stage based on Simon’s reaction, you can tell he is already underwhelmed. He even whispers to the judge next to him, “Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse,” just loud enough for the mic to pick it up live.
Jonathan reveals a bit of his past. At the time he was only 17 at the time of his audition but had always been teased and bullied about his size. His companion, Charlotte, was something of a guardian angel for young Jonathan. Their singing teacher was the one that brought them together as the killer opera pop duo.
But in fact, 3 months before his audition he had an enormous nervous breakdown. This was due to a severe case of depression and self induced harm he had been suffering due years of torment and bullying.
“Kids can be really horrible and they would pick on me about my weight. It really damaged my confidence, and while I tried not to let it show, I think that led to my depression. Being bullied just sucks the life out of you.”
He was even admitted to the hospital a few times with deep cuts on his arms and stomach. But it was his BFF Charlotte and his audition for Britain’s Got Talent that saved him. At the audition they performed “The Prayer” by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion. Simon completely ate his words and the hesitant audience left speechless.
